You can contact your local voluntary Gypsy, Roma & Traveller groups and/or the Traveller Education Service in your area . A list of GRT organisations and London TESs are featured on this website.

2. How did GRTHM start?

The GRTHM first started in Brent in 2001. It was organised by Rocky Deans Head of the Traveller Education Service. The GRTHM became a national event in 2008 following Lord Adonis’s  approval.

•Promote knowledge of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History , Cultural and Heritage

•Disseminate information on positive Gypsy, Roma and Traveller contributions to British Society

•Heighten the confidence and awareness of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people to  their cultural heritage.

5. How is GRTHM funded?

The Department for Children, Schools & Families provided a grant for the establishment of a National GRTHM from 2008 – 2011.

6. Who organises GRTHM London?

The London Steering Group organises GRTHM London. The members include representatives from Southwark Travellers Action Group (STAG), the Irish Traveller Movement of Britain (ITM), Barnet, Brent, Harrow, Kensington & Chelsea and  Southwark Traveller Education Teams.

The GRTHM London Steering Group provides advice and information to the local community and schools regarding the Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month. The group also manages the GRTHM London website and offers support to local GRT community groups.

9. Why have a GRTHM?

‘…This will offer us all the chance to raise awareness and explore the history, culture and language of these communities, which is not usually included in the curriculum for all pupils.’

  • Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month

    GRTHM started in Brent in 2001. With endorsement from Parliament in 2007 GRTHM went national in 2008 and is now celebrated throughout the UK each June.
