Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month Celebration 2017

Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month (GRTHM) started in 2001 in Brent and in 2008 it was celebrated across the country with backing from the government. GRTHM is an important opportunity for communities to celebrate their heritage and for everyone to learn about the history, achievements and cultures of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers.

Research has found that 9 out of 10 GTR children are bullied in school because of their ethnicity (Anglia Ruskin University, 2014). During GRTHM schools can access resources to teach pupils about GTR cultural history; this helps to break down stereotypes held by pupils as well as giving GTR pupils more confidence to be open about their identity.

This year Traveller Movement will be supporting schools to celebrate GRTHM 2017- we can provide resources and will be holding an exciting event in June. More details coming soon!

Please contact educationattravellermovementdotorgdotuk  (educationattravellermovementdotorgdotuk)   if you work in a school, library or community centre and would be interested in getting involved or if you would like support in approaching your local school to encourage them to celebrate GRTHM.

Equality & Social Justice Unit Update

The ESJU and TM’s Education Support Project are linking up with the Equality and Human Rights Commission to carry out some research on home education.  We especially want to look into the support that Councils give Gypsy, Traveller and Roma (GTR) parents who are considering home education; what information is provided and parents are supported to make the right decision for them.  We would like to speak to any GTR parents who have made the decision to take their child out of school – please ring us on 020 7607 2002 for an informal chat.

Alongside a number of other GTR representatives, the ESJU recently contributed to the Crown Prosecution Service’s review of its hate crime prosecution guidance.  With the horrific murders of Johnny Delany (in 2003) and Barry Smith (in 2011) still fresh in our minds – along with the continued under-reporting and under-recording of hate crime against the GTR communities – our submission emphasised the need for everyone involved in the criminal justice system to receive adequate training on recognising and dealing appropriately with racially aggravated crime against Gypsies, Travellers and Roma people.

Finally, the ESJU is working with Southwark Travellers’ Action Group (STAG) and London Gypsy and Traveller Unit (LGTU) on a campaign to safeguard the four Council-run Gypsy and Traveller sites in Southwark.

When The Gypsies Were Jews

For centuries it was assumed that the Gypsies were of Indian origin, with only linguistics as a foundation for academia’s claim. This book, written By a Romani Gypsy, provides the answer to the many mysteries which surround the Romani people and their true origin. From DNA, to Gypsy law, culture and traditions, to the study of the Holocaust, this book will take the reader on a journey of discovery and will provide evidence to prove beyond all doubt that that the ancient Israelites whom Moses lead out of Egypt, are today’s Roma Gypsies.
