In Toto Theatre

The Coat of Many Colours

Logo of In Toto Theatre

This film was produced as a participatory video project in partnership with Lambeth Traveller Education Service and commissioned by Lambeth Children and Young People’s Service. It was made with English Romany Traveller families from Lonesome Way Traveller Site in Streatham Vale, SW16 and was launched to celebrate Gypsy, Roma, Traveller History Month 2011, as a schools resource.

In Toto Theatre chose to name the film after the famous Dolly Parton 70s country hit song about a cherished multicoloured coat made out of rags. Like the patchwork coat made up of many different colours in the song , the film features the differing views and lifestyles of being a modern Gypsy in South London today. Comparisons are made to English Romany life of the recent past and participants contemplate what aspects of Traveller culture they would like to pass down to future generations as well as talk about traditions from previous generations they chose to live by and honour today.
