Kick It Out launches Gypsy, Roma and Traveller project

Freddie Eastwood is a well known professional Traveller footballer.

Kick It Out, footballs equality and inclusion campaign, is spearheading a national initiative aimed at increasing participation in football from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.

Adopting a community lead approach, Kick It Out will work with professional clubs, The FA and local GRT communities in London, Essex, Leeds, Norwich, Liverpool and Bolton. The project will engage males and females bringing football closer to sites and to up-skill young people as coaches and referees, giving the project long term sustainability.

Clubs such as Queens Park Rangers, already active in working with local GRT communities, are key to a successful roll out. QPR Traveller Liaison Officer Gareth Dixon has experience of working with the nearby Ealing community, and said: ‘This is a positive and much needed project. The club’s successful ‘Moving The Goalposts’ project with Ealing Travellers show how this community love football. Our aim is to use this as a blueprint to replicate this success around the country.’

If you live in any of the areas reference in this article, want to contribute to the project or are already playing football regularly, please contact Kevin Coleman at Kick It Out on 0207 684 4884 or KevinatKickitoutdotorg
