Connections is a music education project, funded by Youth Music, exploring Gypsy Roma and Traveller cultures through creative music workshops. The aims of the project are:

to encourage intercultural understanding and interaction between people of Gypsy Roma and Traveller heritage and the wider community.

to create opportunities for professional, amateur and aspiring musicians from different musical traditions to collaborate, create and perform together.

We need a music trainee to assist on this project. The trainee will work closely with professional musicians, and gain experience in delivering music education projects . They will be required to attend 12 workshop sessions, and be given a fee of £21 per session.

Working with creative practitioners, the participants were afforded an opportunity to explore notions of self and community through photography – the subject matter being objects and locations that had a personal value attached to each artist. The work was captured using a medium format and disposable film cameras.

I enjoyed it because it was a new experience and we got to meet Adrian, Madelaine and Anna and that was a nice opportunity. I enjoyed doing the photography and seeing how all the plays came together.

Courtney, aged 14

I think it was perfect.

Stephanie, aged 14

Since 2009, the Tricycle has been delivering arts projects with the Irish Traveller community in Brent on an on-going basis. The various projects have provided cultural exchange as a positive activity, as well as developing skills, improving confidence and inspiring young people to participate in the arts.

The project is part of the Tricycle Theatre’s Social Inclusion Programme, which provides innovative and exciting activities, informed by the creative and performing arts that stimulate alternative avenues of self-expression for children and young people at risk of or already experiencing social exclusion.

Project Facilitators

Drama: Madeline Smith

Photography: Adrian Wood

Project Manager: Anna Myers

The Tricycle gratefully acknowledges funding from Capital’s Help a London Child and support with printing costs from Photofusion.

For the first time, violin virtuosi Gundula Gruen and Ricardo Marek Czureja appear together on stage with their bands. The charismatic quintet Tatcho Drom join forces with the Romany Diamonds, an extravagant Gypsy family band.

For both bands, playing music means going beyond the boundaries of a genre. Mixing traditional Eastern European folk themes with jazz and classical influences is their way of exploring and expressing their diverse cultural heritages. Their performances combine effortless skill and inspired ingenuity to create a rousing music in which melancholy and humour exist side by side.

For the audience, a vibrant feast of adventurous musical arrangements, perilous tempi and unusual playing techniques is on the menu, an escape into a world where the past meets the present, and the reality plays with the imagination.

“Bavarian-born violinist Gundula could well have been raised in the Balkans, for her playing imparts the true soul of Gypsy music, full of colour and passion, an explosion of energy…” (Vesti News, Serbian Diaspora Newpaper)

Queens Park Rangers Football Club have been running ‘Moving The Goalposts’, a project providing coaching opportunities for the Gypsy, Roma, Traveller community, since June 2006. The club’s inaugural development day at Loftus Road was attended by Kick It Out, who wanted to gain a closer insight into the work being done to integrate the Gypsy, Roma & Traveller (GRT) community in football.

Queens Park Rangers (the newly promoted Premier League side) have teamed up with Ealing’s Gypsy Roma and Traveller Achievement Service (GRTAS), in establishing valuable links to its local GRT community.

QPR held the development day to advise County Football Associations and fellow professional clubs on how to work more closely with the Traveller community.

Introducing the event, QPR’s Inclusion and Diversity Officer, Gareth Dixon, stressed the important role played by football in engaging the GRT community: “Football is a very powerful tool. It isn’t particularly accessible for the GRT community and we are trying to bridge that gap. The project is expanding rapidly and I believe this can be mirrored across the rest of the country.”
